چکیده
Abstract. To derive an optimal observation system for surface ocean pCO2 in the Atlantic Ocean and sector of Southern Ocean, 11 simulation experiments (OSSEs) were completed. Each OSSE is a feedforward neural network (FFNN) that based on different data distribution provides period 2008–2010 with 5 d time interval. Based geographical positions from three observational platforms, volunteering observing ships, Argo floats OceanSITES moorings, pseudo-observations constructed using outputs online-coupled physical–biogeochemical global model 0.25? nominal resolution. The aim this work was to find spatial observations supplement widely used Surface CO2 Atlas (SOCAT) improve accuracy reconstructions. OSSEs showed additional mooring stations improved coverage Hemisphere biogeochemical ARGO corresponding least 25 % density active (2008–2010) (OSSE 10) would significantly reconstruction reduce bias derived estimates sea–air fluxes by 74 compared outputs.

North Atlantic surface-ocean control of Pleistocene deep-ocean circulation
Deep basins of the North Atlantic were occupied by a cold 13 C-depleted (nutrient-rich) water mass during glaciations, and a warmer 13C-enriched (nutrient-poor) water mass (modern NADW) during interglaciations. This mode of deep-water variability is related directly to migration of the North Atlantic Polar Front. Down-core stable isotope records from the Atlantic and Antarctic suggest that 13C ...
متن کاملThe Deep Atlantic Ocean
The Atlantic Ocean is a long sinuous ocean which originated during the Mesozoic following the breakup of the supercontinent of Pangea. For most of its length, the eastern and western boundaries are clearly defined by land masses, except where it is separated from the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico by troughs and trenches. The northern and southern limits are more difficult to define. To the n...

متن کاملDrivers of surface ocean mercury concentrations and air-sea exchange in the West Atlantic Ocean.
Accurately characterizing net evasion of elemental mercury (Hg(0)) from marine systems is essential for understanding the global biogeochemical mercury (Hg) cycle and the pool of divalent Hg (Hg(II)) available for methylation. Few high resolution measurements of Hg(0) are presently available for constraining global and regional flux estimates and for understanding drivers of spatial and tempora...
متن کاملOpen ocean dead zones in the tropical North Atlantic Ocean
Here we present first observations, from instrumentation installed on moorings and a float, of unexpectedly low (< 2 μmolkg) oxygen environments in the open waters of the tropical North Atlantic, a region where oxygen concentration does normally not fall much below 40 μmolkg. The low-oxygen zones are created at shallow depth, just below the mixed layer, in the euphotic zone of cyclonic eddies a...
